The summit of Acatenango sits at 3,976 m (13,041–13,045 ft) above sea level.
If you climb from the usual trailhead (near a village called La Soledad / “Soledad / La Soledad” area), you start around ~2,400–2,500 m (~7,800–8,200 ft).
The hike to base camp (where many tours camp overnight) typically takes 4–6 hours.
From base camp to the summit (sunrise push) is an additional ~45 mins–1.5 hours for most people.
Descent from summit back down usually takes 2–3 hours.
Overall, your adventure will be about approximately 24-28 hours from first meeting up with your tour guide in Antigua, hiking up, doing the optional hike to Fuego, camping, hiking back down and making the return drive back into town.
The elevation gain is no joke and it definitely affected a few people in my group. Understandably so as you start from ~2,400–2,500 m and climb to nearly 4,000 m — that’s a big altitude gain. Most estimates for the elevation gain to base camp are in the ballpark of ~1,100–1,500 m. Being an experienced hiker from Colorado (United States) where we have many mountains over 4,000 m, I felt pretty comfortable with the elevation gain. But if you are coming from lower elevation levels and are less experienced with hiking in general then make sure to consider if you’re physically up for the challenge. But don’t worry, later on I offer up some tips to help get you prepped and on your way!
One of the biggest draws of this adventure is the possibility to catch eruptions from Volcán de Fuego.
Fuego sits at ~3,768 m (12,362 ft).
Many tours describe an optional “saddle / ridge” hike from Acatenango base camp that gets you closer to Fuego.
This detour from base camp adds extra distance (varies by tour/route) and time: often 3–4 hours (round trip). My group took 5 hours, but also stayed up on the ridge longer. The trade off was enduring a little rain on the way back and going to bed later despite having a 3:30 AM wake up time for the sunrise portion of the hike.
Because you descend and re-ascend — you lose some altitude then gain again to reach the ridge or viewpoint — this adds extra effort on top of the main hike.
From my experience — and from what guides told me — you don’t get a flat, easy stroll to Fuego. It’s basically a second mini-hike after a big climb. If you’re already tired from the first day, this part especially tests your stamina.
But trust me — seeing Fuego erupt at night (or near dusk) is something else. The explosions of lava, the rumble, the glow against the night — it felt otherworldly.
Hiking Acatenango and Volcán de Fuego is an incredible experience. It truly is everything and more than it already is hyped up to be. It’s a must do when stopping in Antigua, Guatemala (or any other town nearby), so make sure to block off a couple extra days to give yourself a proper window for making the attempt.
I do say “attempt” intentionally though, as the hike is quite steep most of the way, making it challenging and strenuous for most. If hiking isn’t your usual activity of choice, then acclimating to the elevation, staying hydrating and doing some smaller hikes in advance are all good ways to prepare for it, as I will discuss further later on.
Weather is also a major factor, especially if you won’t be visiting during the dry season (November – April), such as myself. I almost didn’t do it because the weather forecast showed thunderstorms every day I was there, which is common in October – the tail end of the rainy season. Luckily I opted to ignore the weather and just went for it!
Also, be prepared for large crowds of people. If you’re an avid hiker such as myself, I typically go hiking to distance myself from large groups of people as it’s a time to retreat from chaotic city life, which allows for better self-reflection and an opportunity to re-energize. However, that’s far from the case here, as there will be several other tour groups beyond just your own, which will likely have anywhere from 10-20 people alone.
But naturally it’s a popular destination, so this was expected and ultimately should not be a deal breaker. Witnessing an erupting volcano for the first time greatly outweighed the swarms of people and, of course, I met some amazing people from all over the world, which ended up being one of the best parts of the entire experience.
Alright, let’s jump into where you can book your guided hike, how to prepare for it and what to expect.
If it wasn’t already blatantly obvious, my introverted side tends to actively avoid any sort of large groups or guided experiences when it comes to hiking if at all possible. However, in this case, being in a new country with sometimes challenging roads to navigate and logistics to figure out (like getting an uber/taxi to the trailhead and back), I elected to go with a guided group and I’m really glad I did.
First of which is the one I utilized, so I’m able to offer up more information on how it went.
On my shuttle ride from the Guatemala City airport to Antigua, I was fortunate enough to be traveling among some fellow adventurers that already booked their tour after receiving a recommendation from another friend. That recommendation was Tropicana Hostel. While I didn’t stay at the hostel, I was still able to book my hike with them and they proved to be an excellent choice.
A key factor to consider when selecting an overnight guided tour is where their camp will be. Not all camps are equal as some of them are positioned on the West side of Acatenango, which does not face directly towards Fuego, so you will have to hike around towards the South side, where most of the other camps are, such as Tropicana Hostel, if you want to watch Fuego erupting once the sun goes down. In other words, you want to be on the South side of Acatenango since Fuego is directly South of it.
Typical price: USD 89 for “Regular” shared-cabin hike; more for upgraded cabins (e.g. Flashpacker, VIP).
What’s included:
Shared wooden cabins at base camp (with sleeping bag, mattress/bed, blanket/pillow) so you don’t have to carry your own camping gear.
Round-trip transportation from Antigua to trailhead.
Meals: breakfast before hiking, lunch to take with you, hot dinner at camp, snacks, hot drinks (coffee/tea/hot chocolate), and marshmallows.
Water (they include up to ~4 liters) and basic warm clothing / gear rental if needed (jacket, gloves, hat) for a small fee.
Use of hostel facilities after hike (shower + towel), plus storage at hostel if you don’t want to carry valuables uphill.
Local certified guides (community-based, from the area of La Soledad).
Entrance fee to the volcano included in tour price.
Why people like them: They’ve done thousands of Acatenango hikes, so they’re experienced; good value for money; social atmosphere; and they contribute economically to the local community.
Downsides / what to check: Because it can be “hostel-style” (shared cabins, many people), you may get a large group — so if you prefer solitude or a “luxury” feel, you might be sharing with many others.
The view from Tropicana’s camp was spectacular. The cabins were well protected from the elements. They served warm meals, which included breakfast for both mornings, a lunch to pack with you for the hike, dinner paired with optional wine or hot chocolate. We were quite spoiled and I only paid $89 USD, which is on the lower end of other options I’ve seen. This gets the general cabin where everyone sleeps next to each other, but luckily there were only eight people in my cabin, which sleeps 16, so we were able to spread out more.
There’s also an option to upgrade to ‘VIP’ cabins, so you can have your own bed and are not squeezed in next to someone. They also come with windows for being able to view Fuego from bed if you want some rest and relaxation while watching explosions off in the distance.
As the sun began going down and we start seeing the explosions on Fuego becoming brighter and more colorful, there was also a thunderstorm building in the background. From then on out it was cinematic display, causing the eye-level, and not too distant monstrous clouds to flash brightly and loudly. Accompanied by the occasional sounds of bombs going off on Fuego, it was unlike anything I have ever seen before.
Having hiked several mountains and been spoiled by countless panoramic views around the world, I think I can honestly say this was my favorite thus far.
Typical price (shared-cabin version): around USD 70–80 (≈ 600–850 Quetzales) per person.
What’s included (according to several “top-10” lists):
Shared or private cabins on base camp (depending on option).
Meals (including hot meals, often homemade by the guide’s family), drinks, camping gear.
Park entrance, guide, transportation from Antigua.
Why people like them: Affordable, more intimate/family-run than big hostel-based groups, and with a more “local / authentic” feeling. They tend to attract travelers who want value + comfort but aren’t necessarily focused on budget-backpacker vibes.
What to check: As with any budget/low-cost tour — ensure the gear provided is adequate; check about group size, sleeping arrangements, and extra costs (entrance fee, porter if you don’t want to carry heavy loads).
Typical price: around USD 97 per person for a shared-cabin hike.
What’s included:
Local (often bilingual) guides, camping gear (cabins or tents), sleeping bags/blankets, meals, transport from Antigua.
Some reports mention the option of a 4×4 drive up (for part of the ascent), which reduces the physical strain of the climb.
More comfortable and secure facilities compared to the no-frills hostel-style: cabins or secure tents rather than solely large shared dorms.
Why people like them: Many travelers say Wicho & Charlie’s offers a well-balanced mix — good gear, guides, and comfort, but still a genuine volcano-hiking experience. Especially good if you don’t want to rough it too much but still want reliability.
What to check: Because they provide relatively more comfort/gear, they tend to be slightly more expensive than bare-bones dorm-hostel tours. Consider this against what you value (comfort vs. budget vs. adventure).
Typical price: around USD 99 per person (shared-cabin overnight hike) — mid-range compared to budget and luxury options.
What’s included:
Certified guides, shared cabins or tents at base camp, meals (including dinner, breakfast, lunch + snacks), park entrance (though sometimes entrance fee may be extra).
Transport from Antigua to trailhead and return.
Options: some of their packages allow add-ons such as porter service or more comfortable camping gear (though these may cost extra).
Why people like them: They have a reputation for being more “professional” and well-organized than many extremely budget operators — good for people who want reliability, safety, and decent gear.
What to check: As with many operators, extras (porter, gear rental) may come with additional cost. And the “shared cabin” option may still place you in a dorm setting, so if you value privacy, check in advance.
Typical price (camping version): starts at USD 169 per guest (for larger groups) for “Adventure Camping” option.
Typical price (glamping / more comfortable tents): from USD 229 up to ~USD 319 per guest (varies with group size).

What to check: Because they aim for comfort, price is higher than “budget” options. If you’re on a tight budget or don’t need “glamping,” a simpler operator may suit you better.

The size of the group / cabin — some “cheap” tours may cram many people into a cabin or tent; if you care about comfort or privacy, consider upgrading or picking smaller-group tours.
What gear is provided vs. what you need to bring — sleeping bags, jackets, gloves, headlamps, etc. Some include rentals, others expect you to bring it or pay extra.
Optional costs: extra hike to Fuego (if you want it), porter service if you don’t want to carry heavy gear, 4×4 ride if available (some companies offer it), sometimes extra for private tours.
Season & weather: during rainy season conditions are harder, so tours may be more demanding or less predictable. It’s wise to check forecast and tour company’s cancellation / weather policy ahead of time.
Since I know you value honest preparation (especially coming from outdoor-adventure background), here’s what I’d do if I were to plan this hike again (or recommend it to someone):
Acclimatize: Stay at altitude (e.g. in Antigua, which sits around ~1,500–1,600 m) for at least a day or two to let your body adjust before the 4,000 m push. Many guides recommend this.
Hydrate & bring enough water: The combination of altitude, exertion, and cold makes staying hydrated super important.
Proper footwear / gear: Sturdy hiking shoes (better than light sneakers), maybe trekking poles if you want extra support — the volcanic gravel and steep slopes can be tricky.
Warm clothes + rain/wind gear: Nights get cold; weather can be unpredictable — pack thermal layers, a good jacket, gloves if you have them.
Be mentally ready: The hike is long, steep, and altitude makes it tougher — mentally prepare for “hard parts.” But the reward is often more than worth it.
Consider guided tours seriously: Especially if you’re new to the region — they handle logistics, safety, camping gear — which reduces stress and makes the experience more enjoyable.
Be flexible with weather & expectations: On rainy/cloudy days, views might be obscured — but part of the adventure is dealing with that unpredictability.
Even after hiking many mountains and doing outdoor trips around the world, I can honestly say climbing Acatenango (with the chance to see Fuego erupt) was one of the most memorable I’ve done. The contrast: from strenuous climb to quiet campfire, from cold mountain air to awe-inspiring eruptions, from solitude to shared global-traveller energy like the group I was with — it was worth every step.
If I had to sum up why you should do it: this hike combines raw geology, high altitude, challenge, and spectacle — all in one overnight (or multi-day) adventure. It’s a “feel alive” kind of experience, and for many, that’s exactly what travel (and adventure) is about.
One thing I always emphasize — whether I’m hiking at home or halfway across the world — is practicing a Leave No Trace mindset. And on Acatenango especially, this becomes incredibly important. With thousands of hikers stepping onto this trail every month, the impact of careless behavior adds up quickly.
For me, hiking has always been about connecting with nature in a way that feels respectful and intentional. When we’re lucky enough to experience wild places like this — volcanic ridges, cloud forests, high-alpine slopes — it’s our responsibility to help protect them. That means packing out absolutely everything you bring in, no matter how small or “harmless” it might seem. Even something like biodegradable food waste can take years to break down at high-altitude, dry, volcanic environments. Not to mention it can attract wildlife and disrupt the natural ecosystem.
And honestly, nothing pulls me out of that magical feeling of being in nature more than seeing someone’s granola bar wrapper or tissue blowing around camp. I carried my trash down (as well other trash I picked up along the way), and so should everyone else — it’s really that simple.
Guides and local communities work hard to maintain the Acatenango trail because tourism is a huge source of income for them. But they shouldn’t have to pick up trash that hikers were too lazy to carry back down. Leaving waste behind doesn’t just ruin the experience for others — it actively damages the environment they depend on.
For me, Leave No Trace is more than a “rule.” It’s a way of hiking that reflects gratitude. Gratitude for the land, for the experience, for the privilege of standing somewhere as surreal as the slopes of Acatenango with Fuego rumbling in the distance.
