Stretching over 600 miles from Mexico down through Belize, Guatemala, and Honduras, the Mesoamerican Reef is the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. It has long been one of the best places in the Western Hemisphere for snorkeling and diving.

The Healthy Reefs for Healthy People Initiative (HRI) is a collaborative and multi-institutional effort dedicated to the conservation and understanding of the Mesoamerican Reef. With 73 partner organizations involved, this initiative spans Belize, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico, focusing on the comprehensive health of the reef ecosystem.
Over the course of fourteen years, the program has produced six Mesoamerican Reef Report Cards, offering in-depth insights into the reef’s condition, and conducted four Eco-Audits, evaluating the reef management efforts in each participating country.
Herping tours are on the rise. A growing number of people around the world are becoming interested in seeing, protecting and helping others find and photograph reptiles and amphibians–some of the most imperilled creatures on earth–as well as recognizing the economic opportunity that comes with the specialized local knowledge required to guide (especially people with few attractive economic opportunities in places like Latin America). I expect there to be more people and small businesses added to this list over time.
When most new or casual divers think about diving Mexico, they most likely imagine Mexico’s Caribbean coast–destinations like Cozumel and Isla Mujeres.
Here, at the top of the Mesoamerican Reef, waters are calmer, visibility is better, and, to be sure, here is where you will find the most impressive coral reef ecosystem in Mexico.
The rugged and surf-battered Pacific coast is inhospitable to large coral colonies. Here you will find mixed reef flats, volcanic sand and boulders with some coral cover–a beautiful seascape in its own right–but if you are expecting the typical coastal reef aesthetic of Cozumel on the Pacific coast of North America (or South America, for that matter) you will not get it.
