Rio Bigal Biological Reserve
Fundación Sumac Muyu, the organization behind the Bigal River Biological Reserve, was established to focus on the preservation of one of the planet’s most biodiverse areas. The reserve, located within the Sumaco biosphere in Ecuador, spans from lowland rainforests to the highlands of Volcan Sumaco, and is home to a remarkable array of species.
This includes over 500 bird species, nearly 200 reptiles and amphibians, and numerous large mammals, reflecting the ecological importance of the region. The foundation is dedicated to protecting this critical elevational gradient and the rich biodiversity it supports.
The Bigal River Biological Reserve is known for its commitment to scientific research, conservation, and ecological tourism. By offering opportunities for volunteers and researchers to engage with its unique environment, the reserve plays a significant role in both local and global conservation efforts.
