Las Guacamayas Biological Station
Located in the Laguna del Tigre National Park, this is undoubtedly one of the best places in Guatemala to experience the beautiful and sprawling Maya Biosphere Reserve.
A combination of primary Petén–Veracruz Moist Forest and Ramsar wetlands in the upper San Pedro river basin makes Las Guacamayas (guacamaya being the Latin American Spanish word for “macaw”) one of the most spectacular neotropical rainforest experiences in Central America outside of Costa Rica.
An important Scarlet Macaw breeding site and refuge for healthy populations of Baird’s Tapir, five felines (including a healthy Jaguar population), Morelet’s Crocodiles, Geoffrey’s Spider Monkeys, some 338 species of wetland and forest birds, and home to wonderful reptile and amphibian diversity, Las Guacamayas offers the most exclusive access to the Maya Biosphere Reserve in Guatemala.

Do you have the right gear for Las Guacamayas Biostation?
While it is, first and foremost, a research station focused on conservation biology and population monitoring, it has opened its doors to nature and wildlife lovers.
The accommodations are comfortable and the station offers multiple different guided tour packages at affordable rates. There are dedicated packages for birders, and generalist ones for those looking to see a bit of everything (reptiles and amphibians, mammals, macro photography of insects, and butterflies).
Make sure to check out my post on Las Guacamayas for more on what you can expect.
