Danum Valley Conservation Area
The Danum Valley Conservation Area is a 438-square-kilometre expanse of relatively undisturbed lowland dipterocarp forest in Sabah, Malaysia.
Home to species like Bornean Orangutans, mousedeer, gibbons, Proboscis Monkeys, King Cobras, Clouded Leopards, hundreds of bird species and beautiful freshwater habitats, the area is considered one of the world’s most complex forests for its age and the range of life it supports. It has been a partner of The Royal Society of the United Kingdom’s South East Asia Rainforest Research Programme since 1984.

Do you have the right gear for Danum Valley?
The reserve offers dormitory-style accommodation—bunk beds and shared bathrooms—with limited private options available. Researchers and students have their own section of the reserve that is slightly removed from the “tourist” area. People either come here on their own and then pay rangers a small fee to go on guided excursions into the jungle, or they come with private third-party guides
that are affiliated with Danum Valley.
The lodge sits above the Segama River, and well-maintained trails fan out into the surrounding jungle, including across a beautiful hanging bridge. You need to pre-arrange your visit to Danum Valley in order to set up the necessary permits and transportation.
